If you follow me on Instagram you will have seen this checked jacket cropping up everywhere. Yep, I love it, I’ve posted a lot about it and you’ll probably see it a lot more over the coming months! If there’s anything that gets me excited about the new season (apart from this), it’s finding a new autumn jacket. From the catwalks to the high street, checked, patent, faux fur and padded jackets are cropping up as stand-out pieces in any outfit shot. As the leaves change and the air cools, this checked jacket from Mango was perfect as I navigated my way around Tuscany last week.
It’s so easy to completely transform your look which is why I love this time of year. With so many heel heights, layers, additional accessories (hats, scarves etc), it’s the perfect time to have a bit more fun with your style. Although there’s something magical about summer fashion, there are rarely many opportunities to showcase some stand-out pieces like boots, coats, scarves and beautiful gloves. With an autumn chill in the air, I thought this would be the perfect time for a little fall fashion inspiration for your autumn jacket buys.
Let the swooning commence!
I’ve had so many questions about this check jacket on social media over the last week and I hear you, it’s a winner! Although, as a country girl at heart, a checked jacket goes hand-in-hand with Hunter wellies and a Barbour jacket as far as the rural uniform goes, there’s something chic and urban about the new style. Oversized, long, with a Prince of Wales print, it’s masculine and sexy at the same time.
Yes, I’ve had comments of “Are you going shooting today?” And “where are your elbow patches?” made by my S.O, but I’ve chosen to take a leaf out of Jo Elvin’s book and file those under #clothesmysoontobehusbandhates. The truth us, I love it. And the more my style evolves, the more fun I’m having mixing tailored pieces with more casual, feminine accents. From houndstooth to Prince of Wales, they’re boxy, masculine, double-breasted and different neutrals. Teamed with matching trousers for a modern suit like Amy Bell or on its own with jeans or a silk slip a la Lucy Williams, they’re going to be the most worm item in your wardrobe.
You know it’s autumn jacket season when the faux fur comes out and this year is no different. If there’s an item I’m most looking forward to (aside from a new pair of boots), it’s buying a new faux fur jacket or gilet. Instantly adding a bit more luxe to any outfit, they look perfect with leather trousers, a structured bag and a plain tee underneath. I always size down when buying faux fur as I like them form fitting and snug as the material can be bulky and swamp my figure.
Hands up who remember these when you were at school! I had a Ben Sherman one and an Ellesse one and I never expected that they would come back around. But, on those frosty mornings when we have to drag ourselves out of bed, we can now wrap ourselves in the closest thing to a duvet that’s sartorially acceptable. This is an autumn jacket that will take you right though winter and keep your toasty whatever the weather. Fur-lined, jewel coloured and nipped in at the waist, the new padded jackets are belted with metal wear and hoods. A lot chicer than our schooldays that’s for sure!
