As a rule, I don’t like the feel of too much make-up on my face. I love collecting it, playing with it and trying it all out but day-to-day I’m a more au natural kinda girl. Well, as much as I can be because I still need a little help in the coverage department! When it comes to nailing the no make-up make-up look I’ve found that every tutorial or product recommendation that I’ve tried still leaves me caked with foundation or concealer at the end of it which completely defeats the point.
Although I keep to a very strict skincare regime, going sans make-up in public still terrifies me slightly and I feel like it’s become more of a security blanket than an actual need most days. Plus, why not? Why not make use of these wonderfully clever products that we have to make us feel a little better and walk a little taller?
Over the years I’ve tried out hundreds of concealers, tinted moisturisers, foundations and powders to nail the no make-up make-up look and find the perfect combination of a flawless finish that still lets my skin breathe and look completely natural. It’s more about bringing out our best features and making the most of what we already have rather than creating what we don’t have or masking our best bits entirely. Before applying any products I always make sure I cleanse my face followed by a toner and rich day moisturiser (I’ll do a separate post about that soon) to prep the skin and get it glowing from the inside out. Here are my absolute must-haves for creating a day look that still looks like you.
NO MAKE-UP MAKE-UP MUST HAVES
YSL Touche Eclat Neutralizer in Apricot Bisque
As an extension of YSL’s cult concealer, I always start my routine with a few dabs of this under my eyes, on the apples of my cheeks, around my nose and on my cupids bow. This takes away any dark circles or dull areas of the skin where shadows can lurk.
Bare Minerals Perfecting Veil
I love this brand, their products are so lightweight and don’t clog pores so you feel like they’re actually doing some good. This powder is fantastic for the no make-up make-up look by taking away shine and giving a light, even coverage to give an airbrushed look.
THE CHEEK TINT
Burberry Lip & Cheek Bloom in Orange Blossom
Ok, I know this looks a little scary but as someone who doesn’t wear blusher (my face has a pink undertone as it is!), this puts a really healthy hue back into my skin. I dot a small amount over the apples of my cheeks and on my lips for a natural pop of colour.
RMS Beauty Living Luminator
Created by Rose Marie Swift (make-up artist to the stars) this highlighter formula is 100% natural so no nasties on the skin. Using coconut oil and rosemary extract, it leaves my complexion with the kind of glow you see on celebs but assume they just have perfect skin. The don’t – they just use this!
Lancome Hypnose Volume Mascara
As I’ve said before, I have the blondest of eyelashes so going without mascara isn’t really an option. This Lancome one is a cult product for a reason – it’s light and airy without weighing lashes down and best of all, it comes off really easily.
THE LIP PLUMPER
Strivectin Labs Lip Plumping Treatment
Oh my, where would I be without this? I’m always skeptical about lip plumping products and think they’re a bit gimmicky but this is amazing. It works instantly, giving my lips a gorgeous glossy finish whilst the tingling sensation pumps them up (nothing drastic don’t worry) and strengthens the lips barrier to protect them from free radicals.
THE FINISHING TOUCH
Clarins Fix Make-Up
I know what you’re thinking, after all that, why wet your face with a spray. I thought so too but this is such a fine mist that you don’t really feel it. But, it’s a must-have, not just because it’s pink and pretty but because it’s enriched with aloe vera and allantoin to add a last bit of moisturisation to the skin and set the no make-up make-up look all day long.
