It’s been a while since I did a little life update and I feel like one is definitely needed. Especially because I think my content has been a little inconsistent over the last few weeks and I’ve been feeling all kinds of guilt about that. But the truth is, I’ve been busy. Not just wow-where-did-the-day-go-?-busy but I-don’t-know-when-I’m-going-to-sleep-busy. Something that I definitely don’t take for granted being self-employed, that’s for sure. Busy is good. Busy pays my bills. But, it also throws my daily routine into disarray.
Ironically, the busier I am behind the scenes, the quieter I am on social and on here. But somehow I don’t think that showing you desk days, shoots and admin is the kind of content you really want to see. Contrary to what a lot of people think, there’s a lot that goes into this business away from Instagram – lots of planning, contracts, invoices and conversations. And then there’s that whole other job of being a journalist to juggle as well. So, I thought I’d do a little update to keep you in the loop and explain why things are a bit all over the place right now.
- Well, let’s just kick this off with the big one. Work has been crazy busy since January and I couldn’t be more thrilled/exhausted! I’ve written for publications such as Glamour, Women’s Health and Byrdie.com on all kinds of health and beauty goodness and it’s been really fun getting stuck into features after what feels like a year hiatus. I have a few press trips in the diary and I’m falling in love with journalism all over again. But each commission takes up a lot of my time – there’s pitching, ideas thrown about, calling on experts for quotes, writing it, proofing it, re-writing it, submitting it, changing it…you get the gist! I find my days consumed with writing which brings me so much happiness but fries my brain cells wholeheartedly not leaving much room left for being creative and blogging.
That being said, lots of exciting things are in the pipeline for the blog and Instagram – I’m going to be teaming up with a few brands that I love and have wanted to work with for a while which is really exciting. I did a campaign with Kurt Geiger last week (HERE) which was a real career highlight for me as they’re a brand I’ve loved since I worked for them as a shop assistant when I was 18. I even debated whether to go to uni or stay in the company and work my way up to head office, I loved them that much! So, to be asked to be a part of their #CarvelaComfort campaign has been amazing.
2. The weather’s warming up which means the trainers are back and on and I’m starting to run again. Whoo! Running is my thing. What I always go back to. The exercise that I look forward to doing, that actually improves my mental space and productivity. And running outside is my favourite thing to do in sunny weather (yeah, I’m a bit of a fair weather runner). After being ill with glandular fever, I’ve had to take a break from working out but I’m trying to slowly get back into it and I’m so excited!
3. Another thing keeping me busy is house renovations. The bathroom was supposed to start a few weeks ago but it’s been delayed because there’s a historical beam where the shower needs to be that we have to protect from moisture. Ah the joys of a Grade 2 listed house. So, we’re having various glass covers made to accommodate that. I think we’re going to do a lot of other building work at the same time as the bathroom which means the majority of the bedrooms and my office will be ready to decorate all at the same time (get ready Homebase!) which fills me with dread and excitement all at the same time! In the meantime, the living room is freshly decorated and looking all kinds of dreamy but I’m buying a few new bits of furniture before the big reveal.
4. This winter to spring to winter again weather has delayed my annual wardrobe changeover so I have chunky knits and floaty skirts coexisting all over the place on a bowing clothes rail and it’s stressing me out. So, I’m going to throw out a load of old clothes this weekend and make room for some over-due spring newness. I’m being very specific with my clothes shopping at the moment and only buying neutral pieces that I’ll wear year after year and have more longevity to them.
So, that’s about it. Things are busy but I think they’re going to calm down and give me a little more breathing space to think ahead and plan which I desperately need. I have so many ideas that I’d love to explore and try but rarely have the time to play around and put into motion so thank you for bearing with me. This is a massive learning curve for me and some days I feel like I’m failing at it all but I know I’ll strike a balance soon.
