About three months ago I read a blog post (I wish I could remember where!) about derma rolling and I was completely hooked. I mean, I couldn’t take my eyes off of this post. How? How could this little beauty tool change someone’s skin so drastically? She didn’t have problem skin but it was dull and lined before. Yet, afterwards her complexion was bright, smooth and toned. I needed it. Yep, I am a consumer’s dream!

I wanted to do some research first and the more I looked into derma rolling, the more impressed I was. I love trying out new beauty products (OK, that’s an understatement) but anti-ageing products are on a completely different level. The intricate science and potent ingredients behind them means that the results are easier and more impressive to track. Yep, you have to be a little more patient (typically anti-ageing products take 3 months to take effect), but it’s often worth it. I wanted to tell you about derma rolling straight away but I wasn’t sure if it would work or not. Here’s what I found…

OK, don’t be freaked out, but derma rolling is a small facial roller tool that is covered with tiny needles (between 0.2mm and 0.5mm). This is then rolled slowly over your face followed by targeted skincare products.

Rolling these needles over your face creates tiny micro injuries in the skin. This then sends collagen and elastin production into overdrive to repair it. As a result any fine lines and wrinkles are plumped up and your complexion is left bright and youthful. It also supercharges any products you put on your face afterwards and plumps up your lips. Winning!

It sounds like a torture device but the derma rolling is actually more gentle than you think. There are a few different brands to choose from but I went for Swiss Clinic’s derma roller along with their accompanying serum and antiseptic spray. I started with the 0.2mm needle roller and used it in different directions on my skin before upgrading. It felt like a little scratch or pin prick – nothing that couldn’t be handled.

More or less anyone! As you guys know, I used to have rosacea and have to be very careful what I use on my skin. I presumed rolling needles into my face probably wouldn’t be the best idea, but it was totally fine. I focused on the skin underneath my eyes (carefully!), my forehead and around my mouth more than my cheeks and it didn’t aggravate my skin. It can also help anyone with acne, scarring or have enlarged pores.

This is really up to you. I use derma rolling twice a week but if you find that that’s too much, once or twice a month will still get you great results.

After cleansing and drying your face, slowly roll the derma roller in straight lines over your face. Makes sure you use forward, back and diagonal strokes. Don’t roll over your eyes and take good care rolling on the thinner skin underneath them. This is what blasts bags and dark circles. I then use the Swiss Clinic serum immediately afterwards to help repair my skin before slathering on a rich, hydrating face oil. Derma rolling is most effective at night as your skin naturally rejuvenates so make sure you apply your best night cream afterwards.

Now that the nitty gritty is out of the way, it’s time to get onto the bit you really want to know about – the results. To be completely honest the first time was a bit rocky. My face became hot, red and tight after derma rolling and stung a little when I applied my night cream afterwards. Eek! But, I know exactly why. I was a little over-excited! In my enthusiasm, I pressed too hard with the derma roller and spent half an episode of The Good Wife dragging it over my poor skin without realising where the time went.

After letting my skin recover, I tried again a couple of days later using lighter strokes for just 2-3 minutes. My skin felt plump, soft and happy to be drinking up all of my lovely serum and night oil. Fast forward 12 weeks and I’m already starting to see the fine lines fade around my eyes and the annoying shadows underneath get lighter. Everyone will have a completely different experience. But, for me, I love the way my skin is looking and the fact that I’m doing it in a natural, non-scary way is an added bonus.
