It all began with the Gucci backless loafers. You know the ones, they’re lined with fur, usually on the pedicured feet of Gigi Hadid and every fashion blogger worth their salt. I loved them. And that in itself was shocking. I was not a loafer girl. Anything that resembled a school shoe was not OK with me and although they were Gucci, they were black and that held me back. But there was something so chic about the backless loafer. They were the shoe of choice for the cool, the edgy and the laid-back.
Unconvinced, I asked around for people’s thoughts. The girls in the office were supportive, but not overly enthusiastic. “I think my mum has some loafers” one said. I asked Toff – what a big mistake that was. In between laughing and trying to be diplomatic he eventually said, “um…with the buckle? They’re not very youthful.” Right, well that definitely decided it, I was getting some. Anything fashion forward that Toff doesn’t like is surely a winner.
As much as I would love to, the Gucci backless loafers weren’t an option. I have a mortgage and the black colourway wasn’t convincing me. But the great thing about the British high street is that we do amazing versions of designer, sometimes even better than the original and that’s what I found with these Dune Gole loafers. With a shimmery, pastel floral print and fur lining, they are the ultimate spring shoe. Although they’re available in pale pink, blue, green, gold and silver, there was something so unashamedly girly and a little OTT about these that I couldn’t resist. Whatsmore, they are like nothing else in my shoe collection and that always makes me incredibly excited.
I tend to wear mine with boyfriend jeans and a classic white tee to give them the attention they deserve. But, just before I boarded a plane to America, it was a beautiful warm day in the UK, I’d just left the office for 2 weeks and I couldn’t resist shooting my outfit then and there. It’s not overly styled and couldn’t be more laid back because that’s the beauty of backless loafers, you can be that girl!
