Things have been pretty hectic around here for the last few months so I thought it’d be a good time to have a little chat and have a bit of a life update. That’s the absolute beauty of vlogs and why we’re all so addicted to watching the complete mundane day-to-day activities of people we don’t know while we wrap up in a blanket and sip on a cup of tea. While we’re gripped listening to our favourite girl boss vloggers chat shit about their life, it’s a bit harder to do this on a blog, but hey we’ll give it a go!
So, in the interest of sharing as much as I can, I thought I’d squeeze all the main elements of my life right now into one blog post to give you a life update on some exciting projects coming up. Sadly I do have some things that I can’t tell you about just yet but more of that later!…
LIFE UPDATE #1 HOUSE RENOVATIONS
In a nutshell, I’ve been desperate to renovate our Grade 2 listed house since we moved in a year ago and it’s finally happening. The reason Toff and I fell in love with this house was the amount of character it had – think beams, wonky walls and even wonkier floors! And yes, we even have old witch symbols printed onto some of the beams. I’ve seen Hocus Pocus and this makes me feel strangely comforted knowing we’re all good on the witch front. What we didn’t love however, was how dated the décor was. Having not been touched since the 1970’s it was in immediate need for a refresh – as much as I love floral patterns, brown floral kitchen tiles and brown cabinets isn’t going to be a DPS in Elle Decor anytime soon.
The house is actually two buildings joined together with one side being a few hundred years older than the other and with nothing being straight, finding things that fit is pretty tricky. Sorry, I did say a nutshell and now I’m rambling. There will be a renovation series coming over the next few months because work starts this weekend! Firstly, we’re replacing our boiler and switching from electric to oil, frankly this bit bores me so I won’t focus on it too much! We’ll then be ripping out the kitchen, knocking down a few walls to open it out and make it bigger and getting a brand spanking new kitchen instead. Cue four hour tap discussions and a long-winded debate about the importance of a juice station.
As our bathroom is currently downstairs, we’re also creating a bathroom upstairs which means no more sleepy bannister crawls, cat dodging or 2am toe stub dances. While we still have a lot of decisions to make, bits to buy and hours of Pinterest referencing to do, we’ve got the main bits and I can’t wait to share it all with you along the way.
LIFE UPDATE #2 WORK
It’s been almost two months since I quit my job and embarked on a freelance career and I can’t believe how quickly time is going. Although I felt like I was backed into a corner by my employers, giving me no other option but to leave, I’m someone that firmly believes everything happens for a reason. It was without a doubt the scariest thing I’ve ever done – leaving the comfort of a full time job at a national magazine a month before Christmas and months before getting married and renovating our house. But those forced, reassuring smiles everyone plastered on their face alongside encouraging affirmations of “you’ll be fine, this will be the best thing you’ve ever done” carried me through moments when I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.
Two months later, I still have no idea what I’m doing. Every day is different but I started the year with pieces in The Daily Mail and Brides with a few more in the pipeline and some very exciting offers for my blog so all is good. It’s such early days but I’m loving the freedom it’s giving me (3 day weekend? Why not! Yoga at 10am? Yes please!) and how much I can feel myself changing and learning on a daily basis. I know that whatever happens breaking out of my comfort zone is going to make me a stronger person, a better writer and maybe a kick arse businesswoman!
The biggest lesson I’ve learnt so far is to go easy on myself. This is not something that comes naturally to me and not knowing how much I’m going to be earning each month is very unnerving but every week I feel more comfortable and try to embrace the spontaneity of it all.
LIFE UPDATE #3 WEDDING
In the midst of tile samples, laptops and beauty products is the other major project bubbling away in the background. Our wedding. With the majority of our invitations out, preparations have been amped up and mostly include me staring at a huge to-do list, shutting it and making a gin. As our venue has never hosted a wedding before, it’s a massive learning curve for both parties and can often be interpreted as the blind leading the blind. Throw in the language barrier and the Italians laid-back disposition and we’ve got ourselves a planning disaster!
No, I kid (kind of), it’s not so bad. My dress is on order (finally), the photographer, florist and band have been booked, we’re not short of DJ’s in the wedding party and the food has been chosen. I am slowly starting to accept that, as a self-confessed control freak, I may have to just wing this one and hope for the best on the day. I’ll keep you posted.
