Just like veganism, grains and crystals, linen is having a serious trend moment. What was once considered the epitome of uncool has fast become the hottest summer trend to buy into thanks to the likes of Michael Kors, Beyonce and, well, Instagram all coveting the natural flax fabric. Although linen has long been the mainstay of hippies and upholstery alike, its having a retail renaissance and both me and my Pinterest boards couldn’t be more excited.
Over the last year I feel like linen has got a bad rep – known to be shapeless, unflattering and often teamed with sensible shoes and a shopper tote, it seems that all the aforementioned couldn’t be cooler. Sure, we’ve swapped our Clarks mules for Celine and that canvas shoulder bag for a Mango string shopper but it turns out, that simple aesthetic with a hint of 90’s style is a winner for the fash pack.
Reserved for warm, lazy days, the soft, breathable material goes hand-in-hand with the holiday season and screams ‘effortless luxury’. Whether it’s laying in the grass or reclining on the beach, its sheer, touchably soft finish is so beautiful matched with earthy hues and fashion-forward accessories. With a few rare heatwaves under our belt already, I’m optimistic that we’re heading for a long, hot summer making linen the number one choice to keep you cool and collected. You may have noticed my penchant for neutral tones and natural materials both in my wardrobe and home recently and linen fits perfectly into this new style that’s sweeping all of my social channels as well as my own.
Mango, Zara, Faithfull The Brand and Reformation are leading the trend with fitted blazers, airy belted skirts, and button-up cami’s giving linen an updated, sexy feel for the new season. Maybe it’s the long, cold winter we’ve had or the bleak headlines of late but I think everyone could do with a little light relief this summer, even if it is hanging in their wardrobe. I’m so in love with this new turn of trends that I’ve scoured the internet and put together a shopping list, more for myself (!) to inspire you to jump on the bandwagon.
