“No thanks I’m a nude girl” are the exact words I use every time a member of the team passes around the latest lippy offering from a PR. Crushed corals, plush pinks and rich reds are striped onto the back of hands and tested in mirrors as I rummage through looking for the latest powdery beige to add to my collection. With small features and not much of a pout to boast about, a statement lip has always felt too dressy, too alien and too uncomfortable. As if I’m playing dress-up as a child. ‘Hmm I don’t think so’ I’d think as I reached for my trusty Burberry Kisses 01. A subtle shade has always been my go-to when it comes to the finishing touches of my make-up. It’s my comfort zone and I rarely stray. But, now it’s time.
As I settle into a more grown-up style in my clothing choices, there’s an experimental side of me that stirs when it comes to my beauty regime. I find myself veering towards considering new options in the quest to long-lasting results. From contemplating botox (still not there yet, don’t worry!), teeth whitening (stay tuned for that one), trying out anti-ageing measures and taking my skincare more seriously, I’ve also become more curious in my choice of make-up.
Gone are the days when a statement lip was reserved for special occasions along with those Louboutins we’re too nervous to wear and the dress we’re still not sure about. We’re now rocking our glossy red lips along with our morning coffee and feeling better than ever about it. Whether it’s a playful pink or powerful crimson, since embracing a statement lip, I’ve discovered that every shade brings out a different side of my personality. I walk taller, have a more refined energy and feel more put together, even if I feel everything but inside!
With an iconic edge and an untouchable air, there’s something undeniably sexy about a statement lip that’s hard to define. Although history may hint that red lipstick is a modern day man magnet, there’s something quietly empowering for the wearer that goes way beyond aesthetics and the opposite sex. And while I may not be ready to wholeheartedly trade my beloved nudes for a punchy pomegranate hue, there’s a magic to a statement lip that needs exploring a whole lot more this summer.
FINDING THE RIGHT SHADE FOR YOUR SKIN TONE
1. If you have fair skin with a pink undertone opt for blue-based reds or pink-based reds like raspberry tones.
2. For light complexions use a slight orange based red to pick up the golden undertones and really brighten your complexion
3. For olive skintones, off-set your darker skin with a gorgeous brick or rust-toned hue. Think darker, earthier and more intense.
4. Darker complexions look beautiful with a cherry red or highly pigmented true reds (lucky you!).
