Planning a wedding is never easy. Before you thumb open the bridal magazines and start a Pinterest board you have to think about the kind of wedding you want to have. The old traditions to keep and the new ones to start. When it came to our wedding day there were so many institutions that we shunned – the ‘obey’ bit in the vows (I don’t think so!), having flower girls and page boys and an order of service are just a few. But one thing I did want to keep was a wedding day gift. I know it’s not a tradition in the sense that it’s been the done thing for decades but is definitely more common than not. But for me, it was something that was non-negotiable for one very important reason.
Over the course of our relationship there have been hurdles, complications and…heartache. To remedy that we spent the majority of the honeymoon period running away, travelling the world, laughing until our face ached and picking each other up off the floor when things became too tough to bear. There were times when we thought it was us against the world but the unwavering certainty that we were meant to be together carried us through every tough situation and judgement that we faced. Through the bad there was always the good and we used each other’s strength on the days where we had none of our own left. Through different jobs, growing dreams, family drama and ebbing friendships he’s been my confidante, counsellor and best friend all rolled into one.
How was I to package all of that up in a little gift wrapped box on our wedding day?
As life settles and things fall into place, we’ve found ourselves in a place of calm, contentment and complete happiness. So to give him a gift that puts all of that into perspective felt impossible. Although the choice was overwhelming, scrolling through The Watch Shop 2 weeks before our wedding day I knew that a beautiful watch would be the perfect wedding day gift. A keepsake that would remind him of how far we’ve come over the last six years and how much we have to look forward to, whatever life throws at us next.
