Before the spaghetti straps and the odd combos of mismatched separates to keep cool comes spring. The pretty season as I like to refer to it as. The few months where the air is crisp but the sun is warm and you can really work a look comfortably. The time where you can break out a full outfit safe in the knowledge that you won’t overheat or curse your sweaty choice of footwear. Spring style is one I enjoy the most and this season brands have really upped the fashion stakes with their collections.
From broderie anglaise dresses and ladylike denim skirts to vintage-style blouses and sweet basket bags (yep, they’re here to stay), it’s a season that suits my neutral-loving tendencies to a tee. This week I did a full wardrobe cleanse – clearing out the old faithful I’ve held on to since uni days and never wear, putting winter coats into storage and making lots of room for a few new pieces that will take pride of place for years to come.
While I never shop with trends in mind, I am buying pieces that will stand the test of time long after the catwalk shows and magazine ‘must-haves’. So, these are five key looks that I’m shopping this season.
Let’s face it, espadrilles are never going out of style. They’re a spring/summer classic and have been for decades. Sure, the styles differ slightly and new colour ways emerge but I think a lovely neutral pair are always a safe investment. I bought my Castaner wedges last summer and they were my most worn piece all season – comfortable, not too high but just enough to elongate the leg, they’re a spring style staple for sure.

My wardrobe is in desperate need of a few new spring dresses – preferably something linen or cotton, floaty and ladylike that can be worn with wedges and flats that will keep my cool all season long. Mango and Zara are my go-to’s for this but this year I’m going to make a conscious effort to buy outside of the box and seek out some new, sustainable brands.

#3 Basket Bags
Spring style wouldn’t be complete without a basket bag. Slouchy or structured, wooden or raffia, the accessory trend isn’t going anywhere for another year and I’m so glad. I’ll be rocking my three until they fall apart and hope to pick up a few authentic market bags from my travels this year for something a little different. The design screams warmer weather, picnics (don’t confuse the basket for your bag!) and lazy days at the beach.

I love how the new season is bringing with it this expensive-looking vintage feel to blouses. H&M has an unbelievable collection right now that I’m finding hard to resist – from ruffled sleeves to frilled necklines, they’re impossibly pretty and would look perfect teamed with jeans and slides or tucked into a denim skirt.

# 5 Denim
Spring denim is my favourite. Whether it’s a seventies-style flare or cropped straight leg, I’m loving a raw hem and looser fitting jeans paired with a blouse and sandal for chillier days. I’m in search of the perfect denim dress at the moment, but in the meantime, I’m settling for an equally-stylish denim pencil skirt, teamed with a tan slide and ribbed button-down vest. Perfection!
