From Christmas parties to New Years Eve shindigs, this is the only time of year when the fashion ‘rules’ go out the window and you can be a bit more daring with your choices. My Instagram feed has been awash with party dressing over the last 3 weeks and I love seeing how everyone is channelling their own style with just a few glitzy additions. And that’s exactly how it should be. As the social invites pour in, I find myself in a constant state of panic over what I can wear to each without recycling the same outfit each time. Note to self – find new friend groups so I can get away with wearing the same thing!

But I can’t help thinking that it shouldn’t be such a headache and the most important aspect is to dress in what you feel comfortable in. I see total badass girls like Josie from Fashion Mumblr or Amy Bell from The Little Magpie donning the most beautiful party dresses in rich velvets, sparkling whites or lush dark hues and although they look amazing, they’re not me. And that’s OK. As much as I paw at the glitz hanging on the virtual rails of my favourite online shops, I know that I’ll most likely lose those diamantes, spill Malbec down that white dress and step in the biggest puddle in those velvet shoes.

When you’re running from party to party with a dinner here and a quick drink there your outfit needs to keep up. Which is why this sequined cape from Free People is so perfect. On the nights where baring naked legs in subzero temperatures makes me shudder at the thought, my go-to alternative for party dressing is leather trousers. Not only are they warm AF, they can be dressed up with heels or down with trainers or boots. Teamed with a crisp white tee the beautiful blue shade of the capes sequins pop and add a serious amount of festive glitz. It’s an ideal outfit to take you from day-to-night without the wardrobe meltdown!

Although it reminds me of a gorgeous vintage, Art Deco-style cover-up, this cape has all the makings of a stand-out party piece. Fastening at the front around the collar with sequin tassles and a hint of silver, it is the perfect way to dress up any outfit for the festive season.

Merry Christmas everyone!
