A CITY BREAK AT THE MANDARIN ORIENTAL, BARCELONA

Perfectly located on the Passeig de Gràcia, the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Barcelona is everything you would expect from the luxury hotel group. Avant-garde in design and impeccable in service, the Mandarins aesthetic of accessible luxury is reflected in its position between luxury fashion house, Miu Miu and high street store, Mango. From the hotel, guests can stroll down the main avenue and enjoy the cities stunning architecture and celebrated promenades of Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter.

The dramatic, sliding ramp entrance to the hotel builds the anticipation to what lies ahead; and rightly so. Clad in creams, gold, brass and wood the hotel lobby is an oasis of sumptuous hues and luxe furnishings. Whilst waiting for our room we take a seat downstairs in Blanc; the light-filled bistro and breakfast room in the Mandarin Oriental . With a frosted glass ceiling and crisp white décor, Blanc is a contemporary conservatory for those in need of peace and quiet. Soft pastel sofas and high wicker chairs provide the option of privacy and comfort as hanging gardens of lush foliage hang from the ceilings above.  Housed in a redeveloped bank, the buildings 20th century heritage runs throughout the communal areas. Local architect Carlos Ferrater has maintained the aura of wealthy aesthetics from the lower floor position of Blanc (which once acted as the trading room) to the original safety deposit boxes solidified in the walls of Bankers Bar.

The stylish surroundings and sculptured enamel accessories are the work of internationally renowned Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola. Each of the 120 stylish guest rooms and suites  at the Mandarin Oriental are exquisitely designed showcasing the subtle reflections of the group’s oriental heritage. Although our Deluxe Garden Room was incredibly small, the facilities are not compromised and the vast, deep-set bath overlooking the garden was a welcome addition. I was lucky enough to have a sneak peek at the brand new suites the hotel had launched in April this year. With an extension into the building next door, the Mandarin Oriental has created 17 new luxury suites in the same cosmopolitan décor that characterises the hotel. Each of the suites offers the added luxury of a spacious balcony overlooking Passeig de Gràcia or Mimosa Gardens as well as spacious living and dining areas. The stunning interiors by Urquiola combines sumptuous fabrics of leather, velvet and exquisite Tai Ping silks in a rich palette of green, black and gold to create a sophisticated and vibrant space.

Although not quite as awe-inspiring as other Mandarin Oriental hotels within the portfolio, Barcelona offers the same exceptional service and breath-taking design you would hope for. With a reassuring atmosphere and luxury aesthetics; it is a home away from home and strengthens my love for the group with every stay.
