I can tell you right now that I was not blessed with good hair. Growing up, it was thick, frizzy and totally unimaginable. I would bribe my older sister to let me use her Babyliss steam hair straighteners (remember those?) that would rip out my strands but straighten the ones that were left! When GHD’s came in, what a revolution, my god, they were the most talked about thing at school and you could instantly tell when a girl had been “GHD-ed”.
After a couple of years sporting a poker-straight do, it was all about big, bouncy curls. Typical! Luckily, after a few kinky disasters, I just about got away with corkscrew curls using my straighteners, but it wasn’t a great look! Big, natural, Gigi Hadid-style curls are the holy grail of beauty. They adorn the heads of everyone from Kate Middleton to the Victoria Secret angels and thankfully since getting my curling tongs, off-duty waves are a breeze and in under 10 minutes too! Here’s how…
Step 1: Separate the top section of your hair away on top of your head to keep it out of the way.
Step 2: Protect your hair from the heat – no one likes frazzled ends!
Step 3: Take a couple of inches of hair, clamp it in between the tongs and run them down the length of the hair. When you get mid-way, start to roll the barrels under until you get the end and roll them up to a few inches from the root. Unravel.
Step 4: A quick spritz of hairspray on each curl. Careful not to go overboard you still want lots of movement.
Step 5: STOP! I know, it seems crazy, going near a hairbrush with curls, but trust me, this is what makes them look natural. Choose a paddle brush and really gently and slowly pull it through the curls. Shake it out and hello bouncy curls!
