There’s nothing like a sudden heatwave to evoke panic in all of us. As I sit here, in my pants, it’s 6pm, still 29 degrees and there’s not a lot I can do about that! the windows are open, the fans are on and there are no more layers to peel off. This week has been hectic. I’ve been in the throes of press week and drowning in emails so one blog post was all I could muster. In between scrapping around for skin-baring ensembles and deciding to overhaul our garden on the hottest day of the year, I’ve also been trying a new concoction of beauty products to get my legs summer ready.
As you would’ve guessed by now, I’m a bit of a beauty junkie. I love my skin to feel soft and nourished all year round so in terms of maintenance, I’m pretty on it. But I always neglect to get my legs summer ready and I regret it every year. With dry knees, dimply thighs and pale skin, it’s enough to make anyone reach for the maxi skirts. So, I’ve compiled a run down of the products I’ve been using to get my legs summer ready in double quick time.
Ah yes, the ‘c’ word we dread every year. I’m quite lucky that I don’t have cellulite BUT I definitely notice a rippling effect on the back of my thighs if I haven’t worked out for a while or I’m not drinking enough water. But, my thoughts on it are “so f****** what?!” Most women (and some men) have it and it’s really nothing to be ashamed or feel bad about.
The sooner we all accept that the happier we’ll all be. I go to Italy every year and no matter what area I go to, the Italian women are so body confident no matter what their age or body size, it’s incredibly inspirational and it makes me sad that we’re not all like that.
That being said, if you did want to boost your circulation and smooth your skintone, body brushing is a no-brainer. Brushing in long upward strokes (towards your heart) from your feet all the way up to your arms can help with lymphatic drainage and break down any pesky fatty deposits. I love to spend a couple of minutes using my Mio Skincare body brush (excuse it’s grubbiness, it’s well used!) before showering to get my legs summer ready. It sweeps away any dead skin cells and makes way for new cell renewal, leaving my skin looking even, bright and more toned.
A really targeted cellulite cream as body brushing makes your skin more receptive to active ingredients. I love to use these creams to give my skin a more toned appearance but I haven’t found many that actually work. Enter Clarins! This is my go-to brand for this as every product I’ve used has given me amazing results. With water mint extract, this Body Fit cream left my skin tingly and cold which was perfect for these climbing temperatures. The gel sinks in quickly meaning I can get dressed straight away but I can instantly feel that my skin feels tighter and more refined – just what you need to get your legs summer ready.
GET THE GLOW
I’ve seen my fair share of fake tans over the years and I’m often the first port of call for my friends who want to get their legs summer ready and need advice on brands and technique. My number one deal-breaker fro self tans is that it has to contain some element of skincare. Tanning formula’s are incredibly drying, especially for someone like me who already has dry skin. You need a hydrating addition to make your tan last longer and look more even but it’s often overlooked.
This new Flawless Coconut Tanning Serum from Fake Bake is packed with skin-loving ingredients such as coconut oil, hyaluronic acid, glycerin and silk amino acids making it their best yet. The tinted serum consistency means you can see where you’ve been and it glides onto the skin like a gel making it easy to navigate. Make sure you get a good quality mitt – preferably one with a velvet feel – to spread the product evenly.
What a lot of people don’t realise is that the upkeep and care a tan requires is trickier than getting one in the first place! And this is exactly the same for a self tan. Along with sweat, oils, chlorine and salt water, shower gels and creams are the number one culprit for stripping your tan. Opting for an oil free, pH balanced formula with a hydrating ingredient like aloe vera can make all the difference. I love this body wash from Sienna X – developed by the self tan experts, its lemongrass and ginger scent leaves my skin fresh and nourished.
AND IF ALL ELSE FAILS….
Get a quick fix! There have been so many times when I’m in between tans or need a bronze top up and don’t have time to scrub, moisturise and start all over again. For those times, instant, wash-off tan is your best friend. I feel like a lot of brands haven’t quite mastered this yet. A lot of products aren’t the right consistency and have a orange/yellow tint to them making them look unrealistic. This Vita Liberata Fabulous Illuminate Wash Off Bronzer is amazing for getting my legs summer ready. I use it as a liquid bronzer for my face by mixing it in with my foundation or slapping it on my legs for a flawless, even coverage.
