There’s something different about this September. My social media is crammed full of apprehensive captions of anxiety and excitement as everyone gears up for that back to school feeling. Over the last couple of weeks there’s been a shift in the air that tells us autumn is well on its way. The sun is low, there’s a chill in the breeze and the night’s definitely call for a blanket or two. After one hell of a long summer, this change in seasons has provoked two reactions – a giddiness that the time for candles and cashmere is upon us or a melancholic desperation that leaves us clinging on to the last of those late summer rays.
I’m definitely the former. Although I concede to the fact that I belong in warmer climes, there’s an acceptance that this is England and let’s not push our luck! September and that back to school feeling it brings has left me feeling giddy and excited for the first time in years. As my first autumn being self employed, I’m relieved that my inbox is no longer an email graveyard of OOO’s and end of summer sale notifications and lots of cool projects and opportunities are coming to the table once again.
As fashion month kicks off, there’s an air of motivation and an attitude of ‘let’s do this’ that can be felt over the cyber space which leaves me contemplating what I want to achieve for the season to come.
THE FALL FASHION EDIT
There’s nothing that screams new season like a new wardrobe. I’m being super selective for my autumn style picks and I think it’s the one season you can afford to ignore the trends. Although animal print, checks and logo bags are going to be big news over the coming weeks and months, those are things you can wear year after year. I’m on the hunt for a new pair of knee high boots, leather skirt, chunky knits and statement coat to satisfy my back to school vibes in September and I’ll be bringing you lots more fashion content over the season!
Unlike my very targeted fashion shopping list, my homeware must-haves are endless. To be more specific (because I’m a total nerd) I have a notebook split into every room and categorised into what needs doing and what I need to buy. A. Whole. Notebook. The renovations are slow and frustrating at the moment (HERE’s an update) as we navigated busy weekends and a post-wedding budget! But I’m determined the list room by room focusing on solutions rather than big building work. For example, storage is a problem in our house so I’m going to focus on creating a clutter-free zen home without compromising style. First step – my wardrobe!
NEW PENCIL CASE AT THE READY
It wouldn’t be September without a little stationary refresh! Unlike my back to school kit of yesteryear this doesn’t include a Clueless-style fluffy pen and a new Vimto pencil case. Although I might stretch to a new notebook, just to make it an even 40. My career is always a big focus of my life and I have a feeling that this season may hold a bit of a shift. When we were on our honeymoon (catch up HERE) I couldn’t wait to get back to work as I’d taken 2 months off to project manage the house and organise a problematic wedding abroad (you can read my feature for Brides about this HERE). July and August have seen some exciting projects come my way for TwentySixStyle as well as an award nomination (you can vote HERE – please!) while my freelance career has gone in a luxury direction (stay tuned!). Who knows what Autumn will bring but I feel more focused as the summer comes to an end, than ever before!
