This time of year is a bit of a struggle for my wardrobe. I flit between bare legs, jumper dresses and jeans and don’t get me started on my love/hate relationship with tights. As much as I love my ever-expanding denim collection, I even bore myself with my jean obsession day in, day out! So, in the interest of mixing it up and smartening up my look a little, I’ve been on the hunt for some fall trousers.
Although a little trickier to style than jeans, the key to finding the perfect pair of fall trousers is to pick a style that’s versatile. Ones that will take you from running errands to a night out with minimal effort. It suddenly dawned on me this week that I’m going to enter a whole new stage in my career in a few weeks and I’m going to need to include some more stand-out pieces. These amazing dogtooth culottes from Vero Mode are perfect for winter. It took me a while to warm to them but anything loose fitting that lets me eat more is a winner in my eyes! So, here are a few fall trousers that I’ve found to take your style to the next level.
I’m a huge culottes fan. Not only are they are great alternative to jeans and skirts, they’re super flattering and the most comfortable trousers which aren’t joggers or pyjamas. My black and white striped culottes are one of the most worn items in my wardrobe. From a day in the office to drinks with friends or dinner with Toff, I can team them with flats or heels and they go with everything. This is the first time I’ve worn culottes with ankle boots and, at first, I wasn’t convinced but now I kinda love it!
I fell in love with cigarette pants as soon as I saw Audrey Hepburn wearing a chic black pair in Funny Face. They were elegant and timeless and super flattering, I needed them in my life immediately. There’s a pair in my wardrobe that I’ve had for 4 years in the hope that one day I’ll fit in them again (sob) but perhaps I just need two buy a pair that actually fit me! Teamed with a chunky knit for casual wear or a cool printed shirt for work, they are a must for your fall trousers collection.
I still mourn a pair of black and white floral trousers that I left in Athens on a photoshoot. I hunted for a month, completely in denial about the fact I’d left them in the bathroom of my hotel. And I still haven’t found a pair that I love as much. But the search continues. Right now I’m drawn to dark coloured printed trousers. Think burgundy or navy with a deep green or black print which can be teamed with more colours and go perfectly with a leather jacket. Some of my favourite Instagrammers rock a printed top with clashing print trousers and I tip my fedora to them but I’m not that brave so I always pair mine with a block coloured top. But if you’re feeling it, go for it!
Show me a fitted jumpsuit and I’m a happy girl. Printed, block coloured, tailored or beach, I’m not fussed as long as they fit in all the right places I’m on board. Anything that provides me with a complete outfit so I don’t have to think about separates that go together is the one. Jumpsuits are the perfect fall trousers alternative. A little harder to wear with boots (unless they’re tapered at the bottom) but I’m currently loving wide legged versions so I can hide my feet in the most unglamorous but warm (all about comfort these days!) footwear.
