Athleisure was THE biggest trend of 2016 and although it may seem a bit old hat, it’s evolved and is not going anywhere for 2017. I’ve worn sportswear as everyday wear for so many years. Mostly as a convenience thing more than a style thing sadly. If I’m heading to the gym after work, I’ll always team my sports leggings with over-the-knee boots or if I’m not feeling that great I’ll throw on my joggers with some heels for the office – it’s the best of both worlds! So when athleisurewear became a thing, I was over the moon – finally I could wear my slobbies around the house AND at work-win/win!
This year there’s a bit focus on fabric when it comes to athleisure. Materials have to scream luxury – this isn’t about function people, we don’t want any sweat-wicking going on here. Silk, cashmere, even jersey are big for 2017 and yep, you can wear them all together! But there are a couple of rules to follow when styling athleisure so it looks like you’re doing it on purpose and aren’t heading to your spin class.
1. MAKE ONE ITEM THE FOCUS
Normally, I love loads of things going on in one outfit, but athleisure is not one of these times! In this case, I’ve made these buttery soft Zara joggers the focus of the outfit – they’re fitted, in a neutral shade and include the hottest trend of the moment – lace-up detailing so they’re perfect for this look. Everything else is background noise. If you want to rock a pair of Stan Smith trainers, make them the focus and pair down everything else. If it’s a vintage Adidas jumper, don’t wear a pair of statement trousers with it. One thing at a time.
2. SAY NO TO MATCHY-MATCHY
Very few people can get away with a matching tracksuit (top and bottom) after the Spice Girls. It looks the wrong side of cool. A pair of tracksuit trousers and a slogan Gucci tee however, is a very different story!
3. KEEP IT LUXE
The key to this trend is ‘luxe’ so no sweaty tee or battered gym trainers will do here. Pair sharper tailoring like blazers with something soft to balance it out. Trainers have to be box fresh and accessories have to be sleek. A chunky watch, statement bracelet or tidy stud earrings are all perfect to finish off the look.
